What are we doing?

At present the NCBIS community is trying to improve its impact on the environment. This year the students of NCBIS will take a leading role in this with help from the staff and parents.

During the past few years the school has set up many eco initiatives and we hope that this can expand further to ensure NCBIS does its bit for the environment.

At present there are many eco initiatives running in the school:

Water Bottles

The NCBIS community over the last few years has all been issued with re-usable water bottles. There are many water dispensers around the school campus for the students to refill on a regular basis.

Paper

Every classroom in NCBIS has a bin to recycle paper. This paper gets collected on a weekly basis and sent to Mokhattem to be recycled. Students and Staff are also being encouraged to use paper for scrap work and also always to use both sides of a piece, when working, printing and photocopying.

Reusable Plates

The canteen now serves food on reusable plastic plates.  These are used by all students, teachers and staff to create a sustainable community.

Light Switches

Every classroom and corridor now has light switches. This means whenever the light is not needed it will not be in use. This saves electricity, which will in course help the environment.

Litter

The NCBIS community now has bins in all areas o the campus. This has helped NCBIS to become a litter free zone. You can help this by always remembering to put litter in the bin.

Plans For The Future?

In the future NCBIS are looking in to ways to create the campus more environmentally friendly and creating healthy lifestyles. Here are some ideas:

·        Making sure all letters to parents are electronic

·        Considering using low energy alternatives for lighting

·        Healthier options in the school canteen

·        More planting of trees and greenery around the school grounds

·        Setting up a small garden and pond

·        Apply to obtain a ‘Bronze’ status school

The school this year has also committed more time to ensuring it is as environmentally friendly as possible. The Student Council has an environment committee and a task force of year 7s have been helping increase awareness. The Primary School also have nominated ‘eco warriors’ and teachers are also involved with Eco Meetings.

Links With The Outside Community

The school currently has a link with Mokhattam Recycle centre. Our waste paper goes to Mokhattam on a regular basis. We have also had people coming to the school to sell the goods that have been produced using recycled material.

What Can Students and Parents Do At Home?

There are many ways people in the NCBIS community can help the environment at home.

Products can be brought that are fair trade. These products are ideal for gifts to others and can be very decorative items for the home. This website links to a company which sells fair trade products in Egypt.

Parents can help by sending children to school with Environmentally Friendly Lunches. This could include lunches with the least amount of packaging and the use of reusable Tupperware to use for their lunch. The following website shows details of how this can be achieved.

http://www.wastefreelunches.org/

Parents can encourage students whilst doing their work to use the least amount of paper possible. Parents can also ensure their student has a reusable water bottle every day for school.

Students can also follow this advice and make sure lights, electronics and air conditions are always turned of when not in use.

Remember the 3Rs; Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!

How Eco Friendly Are You?

Questions to ask yourself:

1)      Do you always turn of lights when you are not in the room?

2)      Do you use your air conditioning unnecessarily?

3)      Do you use both sides of a piece of paper?

4)      Do you recycle waste?

5)      Do you reuse bottles?

6)      Do you reuse containers?

7)      Do you throw out a lot of rubbish, which could be recycled, reused or reduced?

8)      Do you turn of all electronic equipment when it is not in use?

You can also work out your carbon footprint by using the following link:

Here are pictures of students in year 7 being environmentally friendly. What are they doing to help? What could they do more?

These students are helping to plant in the school grounds.

These students have helped by turning of lights in corridors and classrooms.

These students share a lift to school instead of using 4 cars for one journey.

These students use plastic tubs and bottles so that their packed lunches don’t create much waste

These students are throwing litter in the bin. However could they find ways to recycle the plastic cups?

News

Check out the new display board on the environment located in the humanities corridor. A team of year 7s and the Head Girl has been working over the last week to create it, and hope to maintain and update it on a regular basis.
