Term 1

Elements of music / rhythms / notation

The year 7 music course provides a practical based interactive study of the generic concepts of music:

pitch, duration, timbre, texture, tempo, dynamics,

rhythmic and melodic structure.

This is achieved through an introduction to musical literacy skills, simple composition techniques and individual group and class performance. At this stage pupils are given an introduction to aural and vocal work through unison singing, part singing and listening with awareness.
Term 2 Soundscapes / Carnival of the animals / Form and Structure.
Term 3 The Keyboard / Scales / sharps and flats.

The year 8 course provides an in-depth study of musical instruments and the effects that timbre can produce.

Set works include:

   ‘Young person’s guide to the orchestra’ – Britten

   ‘Eine Kleine Nacht Musik’ – Mozart

   ‘Indian and Caribbean’ Music

Term 1 History of Music / Musical styles The year 9 course aims to provide pupils with a broad knowledge of different musical styles from 1000AD to the present day.

Related areas of study:

Listening appraising, composing, ensemble work, improvisation, singing, project work.

Main topic areas:

Early music, Renaissance, Classical, Romantic, Jazz and Pop, Modern Contemporary music.
