Our Approach

The New Cairo British International School has adopted a progressive approach to the curriculum. Whilst utilizing the English National Curriculum as the basis upon which its programmes of study are based, best practices from around the world have been introduced into our range of teaching strategies.

Brain Friendly Teaching: The school has a Brain Friendly approach to learning. Current scientific studies demonstrate that effective linking of the different systems of the brain during the learning process improves the transfer of knowledge into long term memory. Brain-friendly learning techniques are designed to maximise this advantage by ensuring that each lesson includes an audio, visual and kinaesthetic component to meet the preferred learning styles of our pupils.

Assessment for Learning is an integral part of our daily programme. Extensive research has demonstrated that the most effective teachers utilize a series of assessment techniques that ensure that each pupil understands the purpose of each lesson and know how they can judge by themselves whether they have met this expectation. Similarly, it emphasises the need for teachers to not just rely on summative assessments, but to utilise a range of on-going informal assessment practices that will help monitor the progress and learning needs of each child from one day to the next.

Literacy Acquisition: The Primary school has placed a particular emphasis on the early development of reading and writing skills. The key to this is the introduction of the Jolly Phonics approach to assist children to learn to decode letter sounds and words, moving onto utilising a rang of transactional reading strategies that focus on developing the critical skills that good readers use to comprehend texts.

Special Education Needs: Some children have particular learning challenges that require early intervention if they are to make the progress that is required of them. The school has a very effective Individual Educational Needs department which provides in-class support for individual pupils, and where required, also withdraws the child for one to one tuition.

The school similarly has a strong English as an Additional Language programme for children who may require additional support to bring their proficiency up to required levels for their age group.
